Coffee can be both a modest pleasure to some and a decadent luxury to others. First discovered in the 6th century in present day Ethiopia, it traces the ebb and flow of equatorial conquest and surrender. Prized for the stimulant quality of caffeine, it found early popularity in places of worship and contemplation. Ottoman Turks jealously guarded their early monopoly on coffee production by insisting that all coffee should be partially roasted or boiled to prevent germination.

Smuggled seeds and successful cultivation in the Dutch East Indies resulted in the efficient production of coffee beans and its steady progression around the globe. It became the beverage of artists, revolutionaries, merchants and monarchs, and even inspired J.S.Bach to write his Coffee Cantata in 1732. Coffee is produced from the fruit of the coffea Arabica tree, the best of which are grown at high elevation. In its most sublime form it is the product of careful processing, obsessive roasting and is always fresh!

Procert. Organic Certification is your guarantee that the organic
coffee we roast has been grown without the use of pesticides or
chemical fertilizers.

Our coffees are grown under a canopy of shade trees which supports biodiversity and habitat retention for local wildlife. Multatuli Coffee is a licensee of Transfair Canada. Transfair Canada guarantees that our coffee is grown by farmers who receive a guaranteed fair price for their coffee, belong to a democratically elected cooperative, and have access to affordable credit.
